INCREASING AWARENESS FOR MISSING AND MURDERED

ALASKA NATIVE WOMEN

Did you know that everyday Alaska Native women

face domestic abuse, murder, or are missing?

Why does history repeat itself?

When is it going to change?

When will their voices be heard?

Let this be the year that we can make a difference.

ROOT CAUSES

This issue has many multifaceted problems.

Race, gender, and lack of a reporting network all play a large roll in this challenge.

Alaska Native women lack representation.

Why?

To begin to understand this issue, research and interviews about domestic abuse, sex trafficking, unresolved missing and or murdered cases, and homelessness tell a story. And these stories reveal trends about sexism, racism, and a lack of reporting that can no longer be ignored..

QUESTION: On the organization's website it shares that half of the women in Alaska experience sexual violence in their lifetime and 85% of Alaska Native Women experience violence in their lifetime. What is the root of this issue?

ANSWER: "Rampant drug and alcohol abuse, dark winters and physical isolation (especially in rural communities), centuries of structural inequities and systemic violence against AN/AI women are some of the contributing root causes for the high numbers of sexual violence in Alaska. In addition, education and conversations around the issue of sexual violence are limited and often seen as a stigma which reduces the likelihood of women reporting their perpetrator, therefore, allowing the perpetrator to repeat the cycle."
